Navigating Community Living as a Dog Parent: Harmony in a Condo

As the owner of a fresh dog food copany, I often encounter fellow pet parents who share similar stories and challenges. For myself, I have opted to dedicate my time to my rescues instead of having kids. These furry companions don’t just fill my days; they also safeguard our office, though I occasionally sneak a dog home during stressful times, like fireworks or long weekends.

Currently, I live in a rented condo with a lively dog owner community. When my neighbours discovered I have a dog, I received an invitation to join a dog group chat. This was my first experience in such a group, having previously lived in landed property. I was surprised to see how hard these dog owners work to tackle various pet-related issues in our condo.

The reality is that there have been incidents involving dogs that resulted in complaints from residents. What struck me was how dog owners within the group aren't just sympathetic to each other; they are deeply committed to maintaining a responsible and friendly environment. For instance, there have been extensive discussions about dog owners who neglect to clean up after their pets. In fact, many in our group have offered to pick up another dog’s mess to prevent complaints.

The management turns a blind eye to pets most of the time, as about 80% of the time, there’s minimal disturbance. However, when issues arise, the responsiveness of the dog group is impressive. Members quickly offer apologies and explanations to ensure that our beloved pets aren't seen as nuisances.

We’re all in agreement that a barking dog can be disruptive. We understand that certain behaviours, like walking dogs in common areas, should be managed better. Our group even takes it upon themselves to talk to dog owners who may not be adhering to community guidelines, fostering a respectful coexistence between pet owners and non-dog owners alike

Being a part of this group has opened my eyes to the dedication of dog owners in relation to condo living. It’s a reminder that responsible pet ownership goes beyond just caring for our dogs; it also involves being respectful members of our community. Whether we’re discussing fresh dog food options, addressing barking issues, or simply sharing tips on how to care for our dogd, the bond among dog owners is strong.

Let’s continue advocating for our pets and ensuring their needs, and those of our neighbours, are met. Join the conversation in your own community or start one, share your experiences, and explore how the collective dog community can make a difference for a more harmonious way of living, condo style!

Hi Vijay, I completely understand where you’re coming from. It is difficult when a dog owner isn’t fully on top of things like cleanliness or noise — and yes, these issues do happen. As a dog owner myself, nothing you’ve said is unreasonable. The best approach I can suggest is to be honest with your neighbour, but also gentle. Many dog owners are used to feeling attacked the moment someone brings up their pets, so a kind, heartfelt conversation can go a long way. You’re not asking for anything impossible; you’re simply highlighting that the barking at 6am is loud, and that flies tend to gather if the compound isn’t cleaned regularly. Any responsible dog owner would understand those concerns. Sometimes, we dog owners get complacent. We become “nose-blind” to smells, and immune to barking. We assume others don’t notice as much because no one says anything. A little nudge helps us realise there is an issue, and most of us will adjust once we’re aware of it. Usually, people do try their best to keep the neighbourhood happy. There’s no instant fix, but my mum always said, “There’s nothing you can’t resolve over a heart-to-heart and a teh tarik.” I hope everything works out smoothly for you — and sending many blessings for your little one on the way!

Hi 👋 I’m reaching out to get some advice from fellow dog lovers on how to handle a difficult situation with my neighbour’s dogs. The dogs bark very loudly and frequently, especially in the early morning (around 6:20 AM to 8:00 AM). The barking can go on continuously for a few minutes at a time, and happens every few minutes during that period. They also bark occasionally later in the day, but the morning barking is the most concerning because it’s so constant and loud. To make things harder, my wife is pregnant, and the noise has been disturbing her sleep and causing stress. We’re also worried that once our baby arrives, the barking will keep the baby awake too. Another issue is that the dogs’ waste is left all over their compound, and it isn’t cleaned regularly. The smell spreads and attracts lots of flies to our house, which makes the environment uncomfortable and unhygienic. I genuinely love dogs and don’t want to take any harsh steps against them or the owner — I just want to find a peaceful solution. 👉 To the dog owners here: Do you have suggestions on how to handle this respectfully? Would it help if I politely suggest that they: • Shift the dogs to the other side of their compound, further from our shared wall, and • Get the dogs trained to stay calm and bark less, especially early in the morning? I’d really appreciate any advice from those who’ve dealt with similar situations — how did you manage to resolve it without conflict, but still get some peace and quiet?
